Thanks to all of you who replied to my problem here.

Some of you have suggested turning off "Wait for dial tone" under the modem
control panel. FYI, I have already tried that, but the sound that came out
from the modem during the dialing is... "weird". Unlike the normal sound
that came out when the modem is dialing. And after the "weird" sound, the
modem wait for an eternity for a reply, and sadly there is no reply. Hence
no connection and I can't get my normal dose of Internet fix.

I'll try this modem at my friends' house and see if it works there.
