I just bought a router (NetGear 314 for $50 memorial sale price) yesterday.
For me, I plan to use it to share 2 concurrent cable internet connections
among 3 computers. Hub alone won't allow you to do that. Also, you can use
router as a firewall from what I read.
I just opened it last night but it didn't automatically recognize the
network. I had something important to do so I didn't spend the time to set
it up. From what I read today, I need to set it up from a web interface or
thru telnet. I will give it a try tonight. I might need to ask a question
or 2 later.
I hope this can also make our internal network to work. I couldn't get one
Win98SE to recognize Win2000 machine (or vice versa). I had to use FTP to
transfer files. Thru FTP, it appears that the speed is limited by the cap
set by road runner even though it's internal. I was told it has to go thru
gateway from RR. Is that true? With router, I should be able to bypass the
limitation, right? It probably make the 2 PCs and one Mac to see each other
easier!?
TIA,
Changhsu Liu
