Here is some useful information from Paul Lusignan, one of our
     National Register historians.

If you want to ask him for more details, you can reach him at

I'm sending this to the whole BB because I can't find the address for
the person who asked (I'm leaving on vacation tomorrow so not in the
best mental condition) and because I thought others might be
     interested.

     M,

     1.
I'd recommend they look in their own back yard at the "Bliss Park"
nomination, Saginaw, Saginaw County, Michigan (NR 1995) for an
excellent nomination of a small locally significant park from around
the early twentieth century. Very good, detailed nomination and the
landscape of the park has signs of evolution during the historic
     period.

     2.
Since many owners rely on "bondo" and other car repair techniques for
fixing their Lustron house panels, I'd recommend talking with local
car repair shops for expertise in repairing the exterior of the
Lustron houses. If the entire exterior of the metal paneled house is
showing paint failure or paint problems, however, their might be more
significant problems with the property (changes in interior, improper
prior painting, etc.); the point of the enameled metal panels was to
never require painting. (It looks like Jennifer has already found the
     Lustron/porcelain enamel message board at:
     <http://www.porcelainenamel.com/wwwboard/wwwboard.html>. If the
answer is out their that's where I'd check or try to contact the
     Lustronites who post to it.

Anyone have any good examples of non-masterpiece city parks
     nominations (local significance)?

Also, any contacts on maintenance of Lustron houses??

Mike Edison: can you help with question number 2?

Dear forum members - I have two unrelated questions -

1 - I am a member of a study committee charged with evaluating the
historic significance of a local park here in Grand Rapids, MI. The park
was is the oldest major city park (1894) and the city zoo was added to it
in the early 20th century. The zoo wants to expand and use the historic
city park for parking and expanded zoo exhibits. (The zoo has other
adjacent land available, but since it is wooded and and hilly they would
prefer to use flat land of park for economic reasons.) This has become a
hot political debate locally and making the argument to average citizens
that the park has historic significance may be difficult. Research is
ongoing and so far the park seems to be locally significant. Of course
the park has changed over its lifetime, but historic features remain -
such as a 1909 pavilion, a duck pond, and circulation
systems. Does anyone have advice or an example of a NRN or local
landmark designation report on a city park of local or regional
significance that they are willing to share for a model? We have the
pres. brief and other national park service publications on landscapes.

2). We have a 1948 Lustron house that the city is requiring be
repainted. The problem is that paint will not adhere to the metal
paneled exterior. The panels can not be removed (at least without a
major deconstruction) and the owner is at a loss as to how to proceed.
Does anyone have experience with this situation. Is there any car
painting machinery and paint that could be used on site?

Thank you in advance for considering my questions.
