There is a really great book about southern attitudes
toward the Civil War, the north etc. called "Confederates
in the Attic." Also a lot of interesting and funny stuff
about hard core reenactors.  It's very well written;
funny in parts, incredibly engaging and thought
provoking.
I was never really interested in visiting the south until
I read this book. A camping trip to Kentucky and
Tennessee at age 12 doesn't exactly give much of a view.
 Especially when the highlight was Opryland and Twitty
City. Whew! We did have a good time, though.
