Yes, I would suspect it is bad. Old CDROM drives at one time used to have
proprietary interfaces, but they are all either IDE or SCSI now.
CDR and CDRW drives will look just like a CDROM drive, unless you use software
to write to them. The fact that it is recognized means the interface is
compatible, if it just won't read a CD (gives an error), then it must be bad.
