"lime mortar; as it is self healing "

I have often heard that lime is self healing, and even observed it myself
with my trusty pocket microscope and the passage of time, so I do know that
it does indeed occur. Could you please explain in chemical and physical
terms what is happening during the healing process?

John Leeke
