I have had some trouble with PCI cards---modem, nic (now working), and soundcards (SB Live value and SB PC128)---on a machine w/ an ASUS A7V-133 motherboard.  After much juggling/shuffling of cards, I was unable to get the modem (USR PCI modem) or sound cards to work at all.   I am running GNU/Linux, and I have assumed this is due to the inability to disable PCI plugandplay.

Sure, I have noticed a lot of messages on different lists,etc. about vagaries of PCI cards; so I assumed that this was something I would have to deal with later.  However, a friend says he has similar problems with an ASUS motherboard, and there is a lot of traffic on various sites about it.  I wasn't able to easily find anything on an ASUS site.  He is preparing to move from an Athlon to a Pentium over this issue.

Can anyone point to some good information on this issue?

Another issue:

I am considering buying a second Athlon board, since the speed is quite pleasant; however, I need some isa cards; this mainboard has no ISA slots.  An ASUS A7V-e apparently has an ISA slot.  Can someone vouch for it?  (Esp. w/ GNU/Linux?)
