Is this resolved?  I _just_ had the same problem when I suddenly
lost my Bus-Master drivers, and the system went into compatibility
mode support with VIA controller chipsets on the MB.
Getting and installing the latest VIA-4in1 drivers fixed it.
How all this started is a long story for off-list...
Short version: All I did was plug in (totally properly) a failing hard
drive.
