Yesterday I was sprucing up this Dell PII 333mhz, 128mb, 8 & 20 gig hard
drives, Windows ME, uninstalling some programs, installing some, and using
Partition Magic 6.0 to merge some partitions.
After merging and uninstalling and immediately after installing Delorme
Eartha software and rebooting I found the mouse had quit working. It's a
wireless Logitech Wheelmouse and was on a USB port. I moved it to PS2,
using adapter, and it worked correctly. My camera which connects only to
the USB port is not now recognized as a removable drive.
Device Manager shows the dreaded yellow diamond with exclamation point in
front of the USB driver. Driver is named "Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB
Universal Host Controller". Reinstalling the driver, removing it and
refreshing does not correct the problem. There is no USB Root Hub shown,
and I don't remember if there ever was.
Device Status says "The NKTERN.VXD device loader(s) could not load the
device driver". (Code 2). System Resources shows the driver as a Problem
Device with an Error Code 2. Wonder what Error Code 2 means. If I knew
that I might know what's wrong.
Changing driver to Standard Universal USB to PCI Host Controller does not
help; it still shows up as broken. Windows does not recommend installing a
Generic Driver, so I have not done so.
I'll sure be grateful for anyone's thoughts on this problem
