I am gratified with the lively discussion following my original posting.
I will respond to some of them shortly.

Meanwhile, just a note on Freud's language. I did a bit of translating
of Freud from German into English in my student days, and I, too, was
impressed on how fluent, conversational German was changed into formal,
stilted, and jargon ridden English. But I do not believe that blaming
the American medical establishment for this is appropriate.

It must be noted that Freud spoke fluent English; he was very much
involved in selecting translators, and, I believe (I am not that sure of
this), had an ongoing involvement in the translations as they were
written.
