Dear Peter et al.
I think the canonical site for insect-eating is http://www.eatbug.com
(which, BTW, mentions eating *raw* mealworms in the "Recipes" section), but
there is a lot of other insectivory info available on the weird and
wonderful Web. Try this link:
http://directory.google.com/Top/Home/Cooking/Wild_Foods/Insects/
Or this one:
http://directory.google.com/Top/Shopping/Food/Specialty_and_Gourmet/Insects/

Eatbug.com has more entomophagy links at
http://www.eatbug.com/links_etc.htm, which also lists some suppliers of
insects in bulk.

Some years ago I had stir-fried crickets and Manchurian ants at a restaurant
in Santa Monica, California, called Typhoon. Both dishes were quite good.
The crickets had a mild peanut/cashew-like flavor, as I recall, and the ants
tasted like very strong tea. I see from Typhoon's Web page
<http://www.typhoon-restaurant.com/home.html> that they've expanded their
insect items since I was last there, as shown in the following selections
from their dinner menu (asterisk (*) means "hot and spicy").

---begin quote (capital letters in original text)---
INSECTS

SCORPIONS on SHRIMP TOAST* 6.00

WATERBUGS STUFFED WITH CHICKEN
Thai style deep fried 6.00

CRICKETS* 6.25
Taiwanese stir fried style with raw garlic, chili peppers and asian basil

CHAMBAI ANTS 6.95
Manchurian Ants sprinkled on potato strings

WHITE SEA WORMS* 7.95
Thai style crispy fried on spinach leaf with ginger, chili pepper, peanut,
lime with Tamarind dipping sauce
---end quote---

Hope this helps! (Now I've gotta go back to Typhoon to try those sea worms!)
Mary
