Greetings to all,
Here's a message I received today from Senator Bob Kerrey of Nebraska in
response to a note I sent to his office sometime ago.
As you can see from his message, he is in the Senate Intelligence Committe
and probably knows more about the Gambian dilemma than I thought. Since he
has expressed concern and willingness to discuss the Gambia in his upcoming
trip to Africa, I urge all those who can, to send him a message of gratitude
with possible solutions to the situation in Gambia. He can definitely make
good use of our input. We might want to send one collective letter with
everyones' signature on it....just a thought. We do need to do this as soon
as possible since he's leaving this month!
I would also like to urge everyone to get in the habit of contacting the
representatives in the area you live in, especially those in the U.S. These
small efforts can go a long ways.
Well, I'll cut this short for now. It's been a long day for me.

>Dear Mr. Jallow:
>
> Thank you for contacting my office to express your concern
>for the human rights situation in The Gambia. I appreciate
>hearing from you and for forwarding me a copy of the resolution.
>
> As you know, since the ascension of President Yahya A.J.J.
>Jammeh in a 1994 coup, widely reported human rights and political
>abuses have occurred in The Gambia. Last year in the U.S.
>Department of State, Human Rights Report, several high-profile
>political and extrajudicial killings were documented. The
>current situation in The Gambia is of concern to me as the 1.3
>million citizens of this country do not enjoy the same freedoms
>we American's expect.
>
> While in the Senate, one of my highest priorities has been
>working to promote greater respect for human rights throughout
>the world. I believe that the U.S. not only has the ability, but
>the responsibility, to encourage governing bodies to make firm
>commitments to improve their human rights records.
>
> Please be assured that I will continue to monitor the
>situation in The Gambia. Additionally, I will be visiting Africa

> Again, thank you for taking the time to contact me. Your
