NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Despite some improvements made over the last
generation, many poor women of childbearing age continue to eat diets that
lack several key nutrients and are rich in fat and sugar, a new study
reports.
North Carolina researchers analyzed three government surveys conducted
between 1977 and 1996 on the diets of 4,682 low-income women aged 19 to 44
who had no more than 12 years of education.
The quality of women's diets improved overall, marked by lower intakes of
butter, bacon, RED MEAT*, margarine and saturated fat. Hispanic and
non-Hispanic white women, but not black women, ate less cholesterol and
total fat, findings show....
