I've read this in *many* articles about the Neanderthal (that
they had high rates of osteoarthritis), including encyclopedia
articles. If you do a web search on these terms you'll come up
with plenty, such as

I don't think it's matter of bone density. Evidently signs of
Ricketts have also been detected in Neanderthal skeletons.
