America Online Launches AOL 6.0, AOL Plus, Other Services
DULLES, VIRGINIA, U.S.A. 2000 OCT 25 (Newsbytes) -- By Michael Bartlett,
Newsbytes. This is a big day for new product and service launches at
America Online Inc. [NYSE:AOL]. The company announced today the debut of
its new AOL 6.0 software, a new service called "AOL by Phone," a new Web
site by the name of "AOL Anywhere," and, in conjunction with partner Hughes
Network Systems, the launch of "AOL Plus Powered by DirecPC," a service
that allows members to view multimedia content at broadband speeds through
a compact satellite dish and modem.
According to the company, AOL 6.0 offers full support for all broadband
connections and a built-in multimedia player. AOL said the multimedia
player lets users play music and video without having to download
additional software. The software is designed to detect the connection
speed for each member. This will allow access to full-motion video and
streaming audio to those who connect via cable, DSL (digital subscriber
line), satellite, or other high-speed methods.
America Online said that it will promote the launch of AOL 6.0 by
distributing software disks in more than 50 national and regional retail
chains, supermarkets and department stores, including Barnes & Noble,
Circuit City, Gateway, Office Depot, Sears and Target.
The AOL Anywhere Web site reportedly gives users access to AOL content from
any computer, a wireless phone or other mobile device, AOLTV or via
telephone. Members who register for the "AOL by Phone" service can access
online services by using voice commands.

year, then will be available as a premium service for AOL members in 2001.
The company said that the new AOL Plus service allows members high-speed
access to broadband-enhanced content and features from several providers,
including AthletesDirect, CBS SportsLine, CBSMarketWatch.com, CNN,
FOXNews.com, FOXSports.com, House of Blues, Launch.com, Travelocity.com and
weather.com.
According to a news release, AOL Plus Powered by DirecPC is available at
Circuit City and independent satellite dealers. It will also be available
at Office Depot stores soon. More information about America Online is
