I just happen to have a friends Gateway 2000 on my bench that I am working
on now (bad hard drive). It looks like to me the easiest thing to do if you
want to keep cost down, is purchase a standard internal IDE CD-ROM drive and
install in the internal drive bay behind the drop down door (push button on
top of case) to the right of the existing CD drive. Make the cable
connections and your on your way. Or if you are adventurous, you probably
could remove the face plate on the new drive, remove the color matching
front from the existing dive and install on the new drive for a factory
look.
