There are a couple of things you could try to diagnose this
failure:

1.  Make sure you can "ping" your other machine.  Determine whether,
when you stop being able to surf, you can still ping it or not.

2.  Do you lose the abitlity to connect to remote hosts, or do you
lose the ability to resolve host names to IP addresses (DNS)?  Use
IPCONFIG to determine where you get DNS from, and see if you can ping
that address....

3.  Double-check your service agreement -- is what you're doing with
the LinkSys switch supported/permitted?
