Here are two cases where mixing PC100 and PC133 RAM might cause
problems. (Fortunately, each case should be easy to fix.)
(1) Suppose you put a PC133 module in the first DIMM slot and the
PC100 module in the second DIMM slot. If the motherboard is
such that it reads the memory timing information from the
SPD (Serial Presence Detect) eprom on the first memory module
*only*, the motherboard could try to run the second (PC100)
module at PC133 timings and cause problems. The solution would
of course be to put the PC100 module in the first DIMM slot
so that it's the module detected first.
(2) If the motherboard is an old board that came out before
PC133 SDRAM, it might be confused by the memory timings it
reads from the SPD eprom on the PC133 module and refuse to
recognize it. The solution would be to enter the motherboard
BIOS and manually set the memory timings to conservative (i.e.,
PC100) values. (In other words, override the automatic SPD
settings.)
