Hi all,

I spent days on my newly upgraded PC with no success to solve a strange
problem, can anyone give me a hint?

The hardware:
A7V mobo, AMD Duron 800 (650 overclocked, rock stable, no heat problem),
128M RAM (PC133 run at 100mhz), SB live sound card, old 3Dfx Banshee PCI
video, 40x CDROM IDE.

The problem:
Win2k runs great, I can run all my software/games, but Soldier of Fortune,
what happened is the setup won't go through, it stopped at the screen "
preparing installShield at 100%", then nothing happens, after a while it may
close itself. first I thought it maybe software problem, SoF may not
compatible with win2k, but SoF stated it is compatible with NT, so it should
be ok for win2k, plus, I tried my SoF cd on my friend's PC running win2k, it
goes well.
So I dig the problem deeper, I came out it may be hardware related, the
reason is that my event viewer shows three errors in System Log, No one is
Service Control Manager:
"The Cdralw2k service failed to start due to the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it
has no enabled devices associated with it. "
No two is Disk:
" The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk0\DR0. "
No three is Atapi:
"A parity error was detected on \Device\Ide\IdePort0."

those three errors I couldn't get rid of, my HDDs (two on same cable) and
CDROM seems fine, everything works agreat, just SoF couldn't run. I don't
know what exactly those three related to. But it leads me to my SoF problem,
could it be that my CDROM is not working properly, so that SoF setup
couldn't go through? I did try another working CDROM on my machine, still
same problem.

* I did install VIA 4in1 driver 4.24, Promise controller driver for win2k
(the ATA100 ports are not used anyway), and all latest update and drivers.

Can anyone tell me how to get rid of those errors? and give me an idea why
SoF won't install?

TIA

Jun Qian
