Some motherboards Have their PCI slots IRQs shared with other devices. I
know 2 of the slots in my board are sharing IRQs with the onboard U66 ports.
You might try moving the card to another PCI slot, the card may not like
sharing IRQs.

Last February I built a computer for home use. It has a PII 400 on a Tyan
S1857 motherboard (Intel 440BX) with 64mb 100ns SDRAM, and windows 98SE. I
transferred the old HD, FD, Soundblaster 24X CD ROM, and Video card (PCI)
and the system runs beautifully. That is, until I tried to add a DSL modem.
The symptoms are as follows:
I added an Intel PRO/DSL 2100 Modem to an available PCI slot and booted the
system. Windows detects new hardware, PCI to ATM Controller, and asks for a
driver. When I insert the CD provided with the modem, things go haywire.
Windows gives me a blue screen that says:
Unable to write to disk in drive C:
Data or files may be lost. Press any key.
The next blue screen says:
Invalid VxD Dynamic Link call from C182D7B0 to device "0028", service 8004.
Then:
The same message only ending in service 8029
Then:
The same message only ending in service 800B.
Then the system locks, requiring a cold boot.
I can't run the setup for the modem, I can't even drop the CD into the drive
without this sequence taking place.
I called US West out (the ISP). Their tech got the same results I did, and
suggested that I reload Windows, and left. By the way, I ran a surface scan
on the hard drive, and I now have three sectors marked "bad" on my hard
drive. All sectors contained corrupt Intel modem set up files.
Anyway, I tried what he said, and reloaded Windows. Windows wouldn't load
with the modem installed, so I took it out. Once the modem was out, the
computer runs beautifully again.
My question is this: US West claims the problem is my computer since the
phone lines have been tested and are fine, and the modem checks out fine on
the diagnostic software (that comes with it). It would appear to me to be
the modem (since everything else seems to work just fine). Do these
messages indicate software or hardware? Have I mis-installed something when
I built this?
Thanks in advance for any help. We've been paying for this service for 2
months, and so far, have hardly been able to use the DSL service.
