"The Smithsonian has announced the planned closing of the
Smithsonian Center for Materials Research and Education (SCMRE),
calling the world-renowned research and training center an "art
conservation facility", whose work replicates that of other
conservation labs in the Smithsonian.  These characterizations
are false and misleading. The decision may likely have tremendous
negative financial consequences, and damage the reputation of the
Smithsonian as a world-leading institution in preservation
research and study and characterization of museum artifacts."
