Well, the first thing I'd check is if the scanner light is coming on
and staying on throughout the scan.
I'd also check to see if there is a reflective/transmissive toggle. If
the scanner is set up to scan a transparency or negative and you're
trying to scan a piece of paper, you'd get solid black output.
Another thing: Any contrast/brightness controls in the software?
