Hi John,
You need software to flash a bios.
Yes you can damage your bios chips if you flash and then restart with
conflicting info.---but not permanantly.
You must have the correct version of your motherboard as well as its
manufacturer.
Go to the manufacturer's web site and get the latest bios program for your
motherboard and chipset.
For example:
My system is an Abit SE6 mobo. I would go to Abit's site and find the
latest bios utility for it. You also will need to have a second program to
install that bios program. For the Abit it is ABitFEA.bat or something like
that.
You will be required to have a bootable floppy with only those programs on
it.
Boot up with that floppy and type the utility with the bios to flash.
Example: AbitFEA SE6_VK.Bin
You will get prompts after that. Your downloaded program will most likely
be an .exe, which after you run it will produce the .bin which will be
required for your flash.
If this seems complicated, you better not go through with it.
Wrong bios flash will not let you boot up again. NOthing.
Should it happen that you cannot boot, you may be able to remove your cmos
battery and powerdown allowing time to clear your cmos and then you may be
able to boot with your bootdisk. Then reflash with your old bios.
YES be sure you have your original bios before attempting anything.
Also it is a good idea to have a system backup.....just in case.
God Bless and have fun.
