DESPITE PROGRESS, THE MENTALLY ILL STILL FACE EARLY DEATH
from The Boston Globe
Mental illness is disabling enough when it happens alone. But it almost
never does.
Psychological conditions are typically accompanied by an array of other
medical problems, from diabetes to ulcers. The link has been noticed for
generations, but only recently have researchers begun to zero in on the
connection.
Last month, scientists published compelling evidence that major depression
triples the chance of cardiac death, and even minor depression increases the
risk by more than half. Another study showed that people with major mental
illness can expect to die nearly nine years earlier than they would
otherwise.
None of which surprises Thomas Tomaselli. He has symptoms of schizophrenia
and bipolar disorder. He also has diabetes (three pills a day), asthma (four
inhalers) and cardiac difficulties (nitroglycerin and cardiac tablets). And
not only is he sure there's a link, he knows some of the things that cause
it.
