Chocolate was known to the Aztecs, and was regarded as a sacred drink. I
think Montezuma gave it to Cortez. It was (is?) reputed to have aphrodisiac
qualities...you've seen the movie Chocolat...? This was unsweetened - they
put chiles with it.
Mexican chocolate is not as sweet as what we call cocoa. They use it for meat
sauces (mole). I am sure it has many beneficial qualities in its raw state.
I do eat modern chocolate - but only best quality dark chocolate (Valdrona
etc), in small quantities. Unsweetened (no sugar) would be the way to go.
