[Cross-posted to Paleofood and Lowcarb-tech]
I received a pleasant handwritten letter from Dr. Melvin Anchell
today, which I quote in part below:
Dear Dr. Moody,
How Dr. Pennington determined which specific
carbohydrates were correct for the meat diet, I
do not know. From clinical experience, I do know
that if *any* other carbohydrate is
substituted--such as strawberries for
raspberries, for example--weight loss stops and
weight (fat) is gained even though the remainder
of the diet is adhered to.
I cannot explain the reasons for the latter
phenomenon, but it has been repeatedly
substantiated by clinical observations with
everyday people in a real clinical setting. Nor
have I found Pennington's explanation for the
phenomenon.
Though specific weight problems were a minuscule
part of my medical practice, 50+ years of an
intense, conscientious, close physician-patient
practice involved 1,000s of such patients. There
was never an exception to the fact that the diet
must be followed 100%.
...
Clinically, I find the original diet, if used
permanently, is perfect for physical health.
However, the need to relieve everyday mental
stresses and strains with the pleasure derived
from eating other foods may be overwhelming for
many. To satisfy these needs and to excuse
themselves, these people frequently find ways to
rationalize and intellectualize their
digressions. Not infrequently the physician is
criticized for his lack of understanding
regarding the physical deficiencies of the
diet...
