Thanks for your suggestion, you solved the problem for me. I checked the
Appearance options tab, and for some reason the Administrator account had
different settings than the other users! I had checked in the Settings tab
to make sure the resolution was set the same, but I hadn't thought of
checking in the Appearance tab. I wonder how the change could have come
about, since I am the administrator... Could logging onto Safe mode have
caused that change?

It is possible that the user accounts have changed the icon spacing setting.
You might check in the Appearance options of the display for each user and
the Administrator account.

I've come across something strange on my laptop. I'm running Win 2K. There
are three user accounts: 1 administrator and 2 users. The display settings
are exactly the same for all three, but the administrator's display is
slightly different, in that the icons take up a bit more room.
