I'm in the process of upgrading my son's computer with a new TMC AI5VG+
motherboard, KMD K6-2 450 chip, and 64 mb PC 100 RAM. Installed Win 98
SE OEM version to a hard drive that had been un-partitioned with fdisk;
the install CD took care of repartitioning and formatting. Got system up
and running; accessed web, played games. OK. But, going to the System,
Devices, there is a yellow exclamation at the Primary IDE controller;
the accompanying message says that it either isn't installed, not
working properly or does not have the drivers installed. Tried
installing VIA drivers from CD, but they seem to have no effect. Tried
deleting the device, but Windows won't let me do that; I have to delete
the VIA Busmaster IDE controller first. If I do that, Windows can no
longer access the drive, and I enter control-alt-del Hell. If I reboot,
Windows proudly announces that it found some new hardware, and proceeds
to install the same stuff, but adds an extra Secondary IDE controller
and VIA Busmaster.
The hard drive is a Western Digital AS21600H, and was installed about 18
months ago (warranty replacement). I've compared the BIOS settings with
those on my FIC VA-503+ board (which uses the same VIA chipset), and I
haven't found much difference. There is one setting that may be
incorrect - IDE prefetch mode is disabled. I'm not sure what that means,
and the manual is no help.
