P. S. For those of you that asked, my husband is newly diagnosed--depending
on how you look at it. He was literally sent home (from the hospital) to die
when he was three years old. He was misdiagnosed for a long time prior to
that, and when they finally figured out what it was, he was too far gone.
Finally, a specialist told my mother-in-law that Jason was gluten intolerant,
but NEVER told her that that was why he was dying. She thought that he was
dying because they lived near a dry cleaners that was dumping hazardous
chemicals in their water. His doctor NEVER told her that gluten intolerance
was called Celiac disease, that it was serious, or that he would have it for
the rest of his life. She thought that the water made him sick and that the
doctor was just telling her, "Oh by the way, he's also gluten intolerant."
She thought that gluten intolerance was as mild as lactose intolerance and
that he would grow out of it in a few years. For 20 years, she has thought
that it was the water that almost killed him! I am a medical student and
finally figured out what he had (with the help of a Celiac mother who had a
remarkably similar experience--even the contaminated water theory--only a few
years ago!!!). So, yes he is newly diagnosed with Celiac disease for all
intents and purposes. We are learning everything all at once. There is
sooooooo much to learn!!! I have made it my project to learn and teach him
all of it. . . . Thanks again for your help. If any of you have similar
stories about misdiagnosis as children, I would love to hear it (including
symptoms and false theories, etc.)
