Hi Ed,

Unless you run DOS-based programs, you don't need to worry about running
EMM386.EXE at startup.  Its only the DOS memory manager and Windows uses its
own.  Therefore windows only needs DOS's when you're running in DOS mode
either through a window or in full-fledged DOS mode (ie. you restart in DOS
mode from the windows shutdown screen).

The sound blaster emmulation is for DOS as well and will not affect your
sound card within windows.

In the future, if you don't want to see these messages on boot up , go to
Start-Run-&type in "msconfig"-click the Config Sys tab- & uncheck the sound
blaster line/lines.  Click "apply" & then "OK".  *Only do this if you don't
run DOS programs though.

To answer your other question about finding out how to see if your power
management is enabled in your CMOS.  Restart your computer and after the
memory counts up press DEL. (Depending on your computer, you may need to
press F1 but the standard is DEL.  By pressing delete, you'll be brought
into your systems' CMOS setup.  One of the choices on the main menu that
will come up says "Power Management".  Choose this option.  On the left will
be your CMOS's power management settings.  If you change these settings in
any way, make sure you exit CMOS by saving and then exiting.  Most newer
CMOS's have "Save & then Exit" as an option.

By the way Ed, you're not a "dummy" just because you need help with some
computer questions.  On the contrary, you must be pretty smart to ask for
help when you need it.

> Earlier I posted a Windows98SE problem with it not shutting down. I found
out (with your help) that in my config.sys file there is a line which states
DEVICE=C:\windows\EMM386.EXE. When I un-check this box, everything works
fine. It starts up and shuts down properly. However during start-up it
states "memory manager not detected"---SB live emulation requires emm386 or
simular---SB live emulation driver not loaded. There seems to be a conflict
between the two. How should this "dummy" fix this problem? It seems to work
