Ira,
I happen to be looking into this same topic for myself, and I came across a
site that seems to explain Direct Cable Connection really well:
http://www.lpt.com/index.htm . I also have the question of what cable to
buy, and on this site they advertise something called a "UniversalFAST
Cable" (http://www.lpt.com/Products/products.htm), which they claim can
transfer data 10 times faster than regular cable. Anyone have any experience
with this? Is it worth the price?

Subject: Direct Cable Connection
I currently own an older DELL H233 Desktop, and I am purchasing a new one.
I
have read a good way to get data from one PC to the other is Direct Cable
Connection. Can anyone tell me what kind of cable I should buy? I have
read
about parallel cables for this purpose, where ECP must be turned one...how
do
I turn it on, or how do I know if it is on?
Also, any other thoughts on moving data from one PC to another is
appreciated. My old PC has a ZIP drive, but no CD writer. The new one has
a
CD writer, but no ZIP.
