School is pretty cool. I chose Beloit because I don't get those funny stares
when I go places. No one bothers me unless I ask for help. It's really cool!
One of my mentors was an alumna there before she became disabled, so she
went up there to give a speech my second semester (they invited her up... I'm
not sure why. Maybe they wanted to show off what they'd done, which was
basically to ignore my calls. *shrug*), and she told them that they needed to
get their 150 year-old asses in shape. Three years and $35 million later,
they have the school surveyed for compliance with the ADA, I have my choice
of dorms to live in, and I can get into 90% of the buildings either through
the main entrance or a side. There are also large and railings for the
stairs, large print/braille signs, and nicer sidewalks.
The ironic part is that one of the buildings that I cannot get into is
the building that houses both my majors (Spanish and Rhetoric & Discourse,
which is the study of lies). Also, (and I didn't find this out until after
I got there) the ratio of women to men is 60/40. But, aside from me being
bitterly single, life is good. I'll graduate in December '01, and then I
want to move somewhere WARM.
Oh, I went to Spain last May as my 21st birthday present. Never mind what
they tell you, if you have a decent manual chair, it CAN be done. They have
these minivans called Eurotaxis that have ramps in the back and they'll take
you anywhere. I wouldn't recommend going if without a Spanish speaker,
though. They're as bad as Americans when it comes to linguistic diversity.
But they understood me! *big grin*
What have you been up to?
Susie
