As I recall 20th Century Fox had the building painted with fake cracks and
vines to make it look ratty for the film. The paint was supposed to be
removable with hot water but they couldn't get it off. We were asked whether
it was OK to leave it there and paint over it, and responded with a testing
budget that encouraged them to try harder at getting the strippable coating
off, which they did.

I thought the movie sucked too, and for as much as they showed of this unique
building - a highly retouched 10 seconds, maybe, they could have had ILM do
it with a computer for a lot less trouble.
