Susan,
I too have had my modem speed diminish. HOWEVER, the one item that hasn't
been discussed is the quality of your connecting line. We tend to assume
that the quality of our telephone connections, I'm talking about the line
itself, is always perfect. In ALL of my cases of reduced modem speed, this
has been proven NOT to be so.
Here's a tip:
Go out to your switch box where your telephone line enters the house with a
spare telephone. Connect it to the line to which your modem is connected.
Check for a dial tone. THEN dial 3, ONLY the one digit, and LISTEN closely
for static or a carrier hum. If the line is O.K. you should hear nothing,
if you get static, or, as in my case a carrier wave hum, the line is
faulty. If this is so, notify your telephone company that the line quality
FOR VOICE has deteriorated. The telephone company won't support modem
connections, but they will clean up a voice connection.
This has happened 3 times to me in the last 4 years. The first time I
bought a new modem, but then did this check, any one interested in buying a
never used modem ?
Squirrels love the line boxes and chew on them. All that is necessary for
the quality of the line to degrade is a little short. The voice connection,
when used as a regular telephone, may be O.K., but for a modem, not.
Dialing 3 stops all sound except line interference.
