"Re:" is short for "reply".
Thus if you get a message from someone entitled "Leeches", then your e-mail
software will (usually) make the Subject header "Re: Leeches".
In the old days, the software would keep doing this, ie "Re: Re: Re: Leeches",
etc. but it got excessive when discussion groups expanded beyond a handful of
people. :-)
So, if a message is posted "Re: Leeches", it implies that an earlier message was
posted to the discussion group called simply "Leeches".
Since I like reading discussions from the beginning, I will then look through
all the messages for the first one entitled simply "Leeches", but I won't find
it if the first message had "Re:" at the beginning.
