the latest issue of "Fruit Gardener" magazine, November/December 2000,
vol. 32, #6 (published by California Rare Fruit Growers, Fullerton,
California: http://www.crfg.org) has an interesting article on
apricots in it. The article is by David Karp, "A Quest for 'Cots
Yields
Golden
Treasure," pp. 14-16, 22-24.
The article discusses white-fleshed apricots, and has a number of
good color photos of apricots, including the white-fleshed varieties.
A few growers in California are working to develop commercial
varieties that are white-fleshed; the USDA may release white-fleshed
cultivars (to the commercial grower market) in 5-10 years.
The article also discussed "blood apricots" or apricots with red skin
and
red flesh. The trees the author viewed were very scant bearers,
so it may be a long time before plant breeders can develop commercial
red-fleshed varieties (if they ever do).
