With 128 mb RAM, you shouldn't be waiting much for programs to load;
however, you do mention that you are having C: and D:  (fixed drive) access
problems reported by your operating system.

I would run a scandisk and delete your win386.swp file if you have one.
Don't worry, Windows will create a new one.  I'm guessing that your swap
file is corrupt by now.

By all means, run a Scandisk (thorough option) with as little as possible
running in the background so that Windows can "mark" the bad areas of your
drive.   This "marking" will prevent the operating system from writing there
in the future.

You will likely have to pop-up the Taskmon  (ctrl + alt + del) and select
each task, one-by-one except maybe Explorer and Systray in order to run
Scandisk without it taking all day.

P.S.  You will know just HOW bad your hard drive is after the thorough
Scandisk is run.  And YES, keep backing your irreplaceables up.
