Just recently, I was in the same position.  At our middle school, the
office folk tried
to run certificates (on rather heavy card stock) on a HP LaserJet 5M
and 5SiMX.
Neither of these could handle it, either by the normal drawers or the
side trays.
We just acquired several HP 4000N printers, which are capable of
handling the
stock using the front opening tray (where you'd often load envelopes).
It would
only accommodate 25 or so at a time, but tending it for the ca. 300
certificates we
needed was not too onerous.
