David,

I have the 1200U Espon scanner and an Epson 875 Photo printer.  If you are
considering the Epson 900 I would look at the 870,875, or 1270 Photo
Printers.  The Output on Epson's photo papers is outstanding and the inks
and matte paper have been improved to increase the lightfastness of the
photographs.  They print with 6 inks and you can buy a roll of 4" paper to
print photos on.  I am very pleased with the 1200U's output as I print a lot
of photographs for my family.  I also scan in photographs so that I can make
composites or change them to Duotones.  All 36 bit scanners are not equal,
some lose definition in shadows, some don't reproduce the color accurately.
IMHO the combination of the Epson scanner and the Epson printer has
reproduced the colors and detail, so that it is almost impossible to detect
the difference between the original photograph and the print that I made.

One suggestion you should go out and read some reviews of the printers and
scanners that you are interested in.  Computer Shopper Netbuyer and ZDnet
are two good places to start.
