Regarding Art's note (Jul 28) about installing a new drive, we just did the
same and had similar problems. This is not a question, but information to
hopefully help others:
We did not have enough power connectors for the new drive, and, since we
rarely use the tape drive, unplugged the power connector from it, and used it
for the new drive.
BUT, we forgot to disconnect the data cable.
Nothing worked, and we tried a number of things (for a long time!).
Finally, realizing the mistake, we disconnected the data cable to the tape
drive, and that resolved the problem.
Lesson: check ALL the cables (power and data)

================================
Excerpted from original to save space:
I installed a new 20.5 Gig hard drive to add to my existing 13.6 Gig.
... That's when I noticed disaster had struck. My CD Rom and CD-R/RW had
disappeared. Oh no! I reinstalled drivers, ran detect new devices, nothing
worked. ... it dawned on me. you've been pulling out drives and plugging
things in. Check the cables. Guess what? IDE 2 cable was no longer
connected to MB. Eureka! CD's are back home. Lesson 1: Check the cables.
