You may need powered (or amplified) speakers.
I had a friend who tried to hook up "unpowered" speakers to a new
computer and had the same response. "Everything looked" like it
was working, but he heard nothing.  Powered speakers fixed it.

That's really all I can offer as a way to explain the problem. I have a
great speaker and box system that works on other computers and is hooked up
correctly according to same.
