I have seen this situation in upgrading an existing system using Windows95
to Windows98. One quick fix that often will speed up Windows98 is to
set the Virtual Cache on the machine. Do this:
Click on Start | Run and type: SYSEDIT [press enter]
Find the window for System.ini
Now find the header for VCACHE it looks like this: [VCACHE]
Under this header add these two lines, so it looks like this:
[VCACHE]
MinFileCache=1024
MaxFileCache=8192
Save the changes to your SYSTEM.INI and reboot Windows98. You
should see a noticeable difference.
The other thing that will help is to disable "View Desktop as a web page."
Click on Start | Settings | Active Destop and uncheck the item for
"View Desktop as a Web Page." This option is a resource eater and although
it is fun to be able to only single click on desktop icons and see animated
desktop backgrounds... it really eats system resources.
