Back in my student days, whenever I would take the bus from Ithaca to NYC,
after five hours of nighttime rural and suburban freeway landscape, the
bus would be partway around the helix before passing the rock outcroppings
and trees between it and the river. The very *sudden* appearance of
glittering midtown Manhattan right outside my bus window was just
stunning.
