Christopher, So sorry I couldn't make it. Where was this library from
1754-1917, and why did it move? Ruth

Tour: NY Society Library, Top to Bottom, by Christopher Gray

You are invited on my tour tomorrow, Saturday, at 10 AM of New York's
oldest library, the New York Society Library, established in 1754. The
one-hour tour includes the high-style major rooms of this wide, 1917
townhouse, designed by Trowbridge & Livingston, and altered in 1936 by the
Snead Bookstack Company for the library.

The "front" of the building is intact, with much of the original
entertaining space and some furnishings, and the rear of the building shows
the unusual bookstack insertion, made by the same vendor who designed the
stacks of the Vatican Library. There is also a gemlike alcove, designed in
1877 by Sidney Stratton and Leon Marcotte, salvaged from the library's
former building on University Place.

An important element will be the projected repair of the 1936 toilet
partition over which Ken Follett and the "toilet partition queen of
Cincinnati" are fighting.

No lunch is served, but it's free.
