I am with you Heidi:  Don't speak it if you wouldn't say it directly to the
person, and if it is critical say it to that person first.  Now, "off the
record...." What about confidential information and referrals?  Assume
nothing is confidential, hence, be comfortable with what you say of others
and think before you speak.
