I had similar experiences. There are two CD drives on my computer, the newer
HP CDRW and an old Toshiba 2x SCSI device. I have found some CDs that would
not read with the HP but were fine in the Toshiba, and others where the
Toshiba would not read them but the HP would. As Rick said, it must be a
case of tolerance buildup.

Plays real bad (VERY occasionally), and in only "some" computers...
I like it as a "test" CD to see if a CD-ROM drive can read reliably...
I believe "your" drive and the disk are out of spec in opposite directions.
