The *pdf you refer to is the file type.  You will need software to edit it.
The scanner probably comes with its' own software.  Software bundled in with
a purchase is often not particularly fancy but usually can do the job. The
software I'm using is visioneer paper port which comes with the visioneer
scanner - which is a flatbed (not handheld) - it's very simple software which
does very simple things well and links to other more refined applications
such as photoshop, corel etc very well. Aligning bits and pieces of data is
very easy. You can save files as *.max, *jpg, *pdf, *tif, *png & *.fpx to
export them into other applications.
