I grew up on the edge of a large university campus in Michigan, complete
with botanical garden and labels on all the trees listing Latin and
English names, with lots of exotic imports. There was an Osage Orange
tree, or actually a little grove of them, appropriately labeled, about 200
yards from the house where I grew up.
Who am I? Preservationally, I'm the former chair of the Ann Arbor (Mich.)
Historic District Commission, and I occasionally teach a grad course in
historic preservation law at Eastern Michigan University. I was also
co-counsel in the unsuccessful lawsuit to prevent the demolition of the
Hudson's building in downtown Detroit. Tangentially related to
preservation, I have a web site about political history and cemeteries
called The Political Graveyard.
These days I also work at the University of Michigan, in the Institute of
Social Research. Previously, I was with the Political Science department
at Michigan State University, and before that, at the School of criminal
Justice.
Last year, I was a candidate for the Michigan state legislature. Back in
the 1980s, I served three terms as county commissioner.
I have been on BP almost from the beginning, but I only recent met the
founder of the list for the first time in person, as well as several other
illustrious list members.
