EASI Webinar: Improvements in Office Accessibility

Microsoft has integrated new accessibility features into Office

the need for accessibility and when they have to know how to include it
in their work, it is easy to forget about accessibility or to conclude
that it is not worth the bother. Not that a writer is forced to make the
content accessible, but the authoring tool will remind them

Creating audio descriptions for TV and movies

Multimedia accessibility is advancing from alt text for images to
providing audio description for the action in TV and movies.

You ought to try it!

Major cinemas are now equipped with audio descriptions on their movies
and small personal devices for users to hear those descriptions. Stop at
the customer help desk and ask for the device to provide audio
descriptions for the blind and visually impaired. It plays a special
sound track on the film. During gaps in the dialogue, the user can hear
the recorded description of relevant actions.

*Alternative Format Documents Now Available to Residents of New York State*

Hundreds of thousands of New York residents have significant vision
and/or hearing impairments, or other conditions that make reading
typical small-print paperwork difficult or impossible. To improve access
to information for people with disabilities, the state of New York has

Weregret the publishing webinar will be postponed

Tripp regrets that his company has scheduled an important and

All people now registered will remain on that list and we’ll contact you
when it is rescheduled. You can also check our webinar schedule page:

Call for Proposals for the 5th Annual Digital Accessibility Expo (DAE) 2013

UIC Forum
725 W Roosevelt Rd.
Chicago, IL 60608
April 22, 2013

Making digital information accessible has moved beyond the "text only" link on a Web site.  Digital information needs to be informative, dynamic, and beautiful for everyone to access.   The standards have been raised, and new techniques in digital design allow for accessibility for people with disabilities and also conform to high standards in artistic web design.

with more simple authoring tools it will include exercises and will expect
participants to create actual multimedia during the series. We want to
stress hands-on assignments enabling participants to become multimedia

Could anyone suggest an accessible online video player? Any advice about how accurate this list I found on Penn State's website is? QuickTime, RealPlayer, iTunes<http://accessibility.psu.edu/podcasts>, YouTube<http://accessibility.psu.edu/youtubecaptions> and properly configured JW Player<http://wac.osu.edu/examples/jwpc/>
I was not able to get Jaws to access the buttons on Youtube, so I was a little unsure about this list.

Besides learning about designing Web pages that will be fully accessible to

The best way for you to do that is by obtaining and using a Firefox toolbar

Week 1, July 10, is on creating audio. It will include creating audio,
cutting and pasting, changing volume levels, fading in and out, merging

[Apologies in advance for sending this out to multiple lists] There's a relatively painless way you can comment to the National Science Foundation and the Department of Education about the need for accessibility to mathematics in education. But be forewarned that the deadline is July 1 (this Sunday), so be sure to submit something this week. There's a very brief survey which the NSF and Dept. of Ed. are asking people to fill out concerning a new jointly-funded K-16 Mathematics Education Initiative. I think it is important that the feds hear about the issues students with disabilities face when learning

The EASI site should be available now.
The problem was not with the site as such. There are name tables on the
Internet that change the address you are seeking so it turns into
corresponding numbers. One of those tables had an error in it, but it is
now corrected. This means your browser should be able to find us now.
It is possible that in a couple regions, it may take a little time for it

Webinars Take the Mountain to Muhammad

Are your department budgets being cut?

Is your travel being restricted?

If so, how do you keep up-to-date on the rapid transformations happening
daily in the technologies that are crucial to your department’s
responsibilities?

Internet Webinars have the ability to bring the mountains of new
information to you rather than your having to go to conferences and attend
presentations. Of course, there have always been books and journals. These
now abound in electronic formats at Web sites around the world. Webinars
can do more. You are in a virtual conference room with a presenter,

I saw this last week and was expecting it to get lots of play on various lists, but I haven't seen anyone reposting this information. I wouldn't want this wonderful opportunity to go without the publicity it deserves, so I am sending this out to a few places. EASI is offering a short, helpful pamphlet for online teachers. The tips do
support making online teaching accessible, but the tips are more about
teaching than about accessibility. They content that good teaching is the
most important part of accessibility for students with disabilities.

This short pamphlet is a free bonus for those who register for the
Barrier-free E-learning course which is EASI's month-long course for March

Information Technology and Disabilities e-journal is being revived in 2012
as a peer-reviewed journal.

The revitalized publication is a merger of 2 previous ventures: ATHEN
E-Journal and Information Technology and Disabilities . DO-IT students
spent the summer bringing the old archives in line with modern Web
accessibility best practices.

Thank you for your patience. The course no longer is using this list, and
we have restored it to be the EASI discussion list.

Thanks for asking that Norm - and Karen for answering!

Karen I have a couple of questions:

1. When do you use the longdesc attribute and how is it parsed with a
screen reader?

2. How would you change the position of a list within the page (since list
position doesn't seem to be the thing ;)

Hi:

Because I have zero vision, I am unable to check my understanding of CSS by
trying it and seeing how it looks. Otherwise, I could probably answer my
own questions by trial and error.

You mentioned padding and margins. In my mind, they sound sort of like the
same thing but I guess not.
Here is my guess and you can straighten me out......
I can set up a border. Then the padding will be the space between the
border and the edges of the monitor.
I can also set up margins and that will be the space inside

Thanks again for a highly informative presentation.

You mentioned, I think in week 1, that an individual can create a personal
css and instruct his or her browser to use the personal css and over ride
the Web designers css.
Once I have created a personal.css how do I set up my browser to use it as
my css????

OK, used the wrong account name..

Hello Everyone!

I've asked Norm to set this list up for the next four weeks. After the last
webinar please contact me directly at [log in to unmask]

I've created a sample web site for you to work with and will be adding pages
for you each week. Not to worry, only a couple more pages, one specifically
on tables and any others as needed to demonstrate technique. The files are
zipped so you will need to unzip them. Let me know if you need instructions.

month of February.

I'll put your names back on the listserv early in March and email you a

We are sponsoring a 4-part Webinar series in February, and we need a way
for the participants to have a discussion. I'll send you all a notice, but
I'll take this offline for February and then activate it again in March.

Please forgive me and please be patient.
